Keeping body & mind healthy over 50

Eating well and exercising are good for keeping body & mind healthy over 50, but unless you’ve been living under a rock, an article about that isn’t going to tell you anything you don’t already know! This article will help you keep your mind and body healthy, but we’ve taken to our top apps to be your teacher. The apps we’ve picked are our favourites to help keep you sharp, confident and even flexible as you age (gracefully of course).

Stay sharp with Elevate.

This one was voted app of the year by Apple – so it’s a good place to start.
Elevate is filled with brain training games that promise to improve focus, speaking abilities, processing speed, memory, math skills, and more. When you sign up you enter your details to receive a personalised training program that adjusts over time to maximise results.

Elevate claims: “The more you train with Elevate, the more you’ll improve critical cognitive skills that are proven to boost productivity, earning power, and self-confidence. Users who train at least 3 times per week have reported dramatic gains and increased confidence.” Sounds good to us! Start with the free version and work your way up to the premium if you enjoy it.

Find peace in minutes with Headspace.

After all that brain training, your mind might need a little rest… lucky there’s an app for that! Headspace is a very user friendly introduction to meditation and mindfulness with simple and easy to use features that you can get stuck in with straight away. You can work through courses in areas of life such as relationships, confidence and sleep, as well as just pick up and be guided through a little meditation in just 3 minutes.

In a world full of noise, Headspace helps you find the peace your mind needs. You’ll feel calmer within minutes with this app and it will soon become a staple in your routine. You can try the free version or pay a subscription for more variety.

Parlez-vous français? Learn the language of love with Duolingo.

It’s never too late to learn something new! Duolingo is a fantastic app which helps you learn a new language in just a few minutes a day. Whilst it’s easier to learn a new language in your youth, we like that this is more of a challenge!

Duolingo is the most popular app for learning a language because of its simplicity, ease and the way it feels like a game. It has over 300 million users! With over 20 languages to choose from this is a great way of keeping yourself learning. Why not challenge a partner and see who can learn the most each week? Si? Choose between free and paid options depending on requirements.

A library at your fingertips – Listen to your favourite books with Audible.

Have you ever wished you could read your favourite book whilst walking the dog? Hello Audible. Audible takes all your favorite books and transforms them to audio books you can take anywhere. Whilst this removes the benefits of physically reading, you’re able to zone out whilst doing other tasks, continue learning or lose yourself in a story, all of which are great for our mental health.

Try a free trial and then progress to a monthly plan where you pay for ‘credits’ per book. We’re always waiting for credit top-up day. Audible is a great way of managing to read that book you’ve always wanted to read but never had the time – now there’s no excuse!

Namaste – Take to your mat with Downward Dog .

Strengthened muscles, a stronger core, better balance, better flexibility, reduced tightness, improved mental-wellbeing – all of these benefits come with Yoga! Downward Dog is a great app to get your practice started, with a huge variety of options in length, difficulty and even voice! Each sequence is personalised with music that’ll bring the yoga studio straight to you in your home.

Often yoga can be seen as intimidating, but really all it needs is you and a mat, the rest will come with time and practice. Your mind and body will thank you for this download, which is currently free to help provide escapism during the difficult times we are facing as the world fights Covid-19.

Zone out with a Podcast.

From Desert Island Discs to The Joe Rogan Experience, podcasts offer a unique way to understand new concepts and opinions. Find interests you never knew you had with a variety of shows and guests to broaden your horizons and challenge your thinking. Once you’ve started, you’ll find you can’t stop & will be completing all your daily tasks with the familiar voice of your favourite podcaster in your ear.

Not only do podcasts make for great listening, they also make a great conversation starter, giving you something fresh to talk about!

Now the real test is… can you use them all at once: solving maths problems, in french, whilst in downward dog with a podcast in one ear, and audible in the other?! Enjoy!
